Here are the steps to follow in order to equip your offspring's schoolbag with a very practical item, which will become, who knows (with a bit of luck...), an essential item for this new school year...
Materials:
4 squares of 23*23cm fabric (the pink polka dots and apples will be for the inside and outside of the kit; the turquoise for the lining...)
2 x 20 cm zippers
19 cm of velcro
Step 1:
Attach the first fastener between the outer square (apples) and the lining (turquoise), right sides of apples against right sides of fastener and turquoise against reverse side of fastener). This allows you to sew the 2 fabrics in a single pass..
Step 2:
Press the seams and topstitch along the fastener for a beautiful finish.
2nd optional step:
Attach your label. I sew it onto the lining.
Step 3:
Sew the second part of the zipper with the pink fabric with white polka dots and the turquoise fabric, in the same way as in the first step.
Step 4:
Sew part of the Velcro to the pink polka-dot fabric (take care not to catch the turquoise lining in the seam, so that it's hidden).
Step 5:
Sew the second part of the velcro 2 cm from the edge of the polka-dot fabric.
Step 6:
Sew the second zipper in the same way as the first and topstitch. For the final topstitching, open the zipper all the way to the bottom and start sewing from the top (see photo of kit on sewing machine).
Here's what you need at this stage:
OUTSIDE:
INSIDE:
Step 7:
Since all the zippers are topstitched, there will still be a visible seam on the inside, which we'll try to make as neat as possible...
Turn the kit inside out, so that only the lining fabric is visible.
Sew a seam on each side, taking care to leave a zipper open for turning...
As for me, I make my seams 1.7 cm from the edge for a nicer finish around the zipper. I then cut flush with my overcasting.
Here's what you need to get (cheer up, it's almost over...):
Step 8:
Fold your kit in half and mark the middle with a pin.
Step 9:
Make the seam that will separate the two parts of the kit.
10th (and final) step:
Admire your work. Put away your pencils and rest for having worked so well!
