How to Sew Pencil Case with Zipper

 In this tutorial, I would like to show how to sew  simple pencil case (or cosmetic bag) with a zipper.

The volume of a pencil case is acquired due to the side folds. This tutorial is suitable for beginners. In just one hour you can make an unusual gift.

For work you will need:

* thick cotton for the outside of the pencil case;
* cotton for lining;
* cotton for details, covering the side cut;
* interfacing;
* lightning;
* sewing machine;
* threads;
* scissors;
* needle.

 The length of the parts and the pencil case itself will depend on the length of the zipper. In my case, the total length of the zipper is 19 cm, the length of its part with teeth is 16 cm.

From the fabric for the outer part of the pencil case, cut out a detail size of 19 cm (total length of the zipper) * 23 cm.

From fabric for lining cut out a detail of the same size 19*23 cm

Cut out the interfacing detail of 19 (total zipper length) * 22. So, the interfacing detail is 1 cm narrower than the part to the outer part of the case.

Iron the interfacing to the outer parts of the case. Place the interfacing, so that the right and left are 5 mm from the edges.

 Put the zipper on the outer part of the pencil case face down and secure it with pins.

 Place the lining part face down on top. Secure all the three parts together (the outer part of the case, zipper and lining). Lay the line, leaving 5 mm from the edge. At the beginning and at the end of the line, make a clip.

Iron the outer part of the pencil case and lining in different directions.

Lay a decorative line along the zipper, leaving 2-3 mm from the edge.

Similarly, sew the second side of the zipper. Put the outer part of the case on the zipper and secure with pins.

On the other side of the zipper, secure the detail of the lining with pins.

Turn the pencil case out and iron the folds along the zipper.

Lay a decorative line along the second seam, leaving 2-3 mm from the edge.

Fold the pencil case, so that the gap between the details of the lightning is exactly in the middle. Secure the parts in this position.

To make the pencil case volume, form pinches (side folds). Folds are 1.5 cm deep. Secure the folds with pins.

Lay a line along the top edge of the pencil case, leaving 1 cm from the edge.

Place the zipper in the center on the other side of the pencil case and form folds. Similarly, lay the line, leaving 1 cm from the edge. Cut off the protruding tips of the zipper (if any).

In my case, the final size of the pencil case along the top seam is 8 cm. If you made the folds deeper, then this size may be smaller.

In my case, I cut out 2 fabric rectangles size of 9 cm (8 cm wide + 1 cm) * 4.5 cm.

Fold the edges of 0.5 cm inside, as shown in the photo, and attach the rectangle to the pencil case.

Lay the line, leaving 1 cm from the edge. At the beginning and end of the line, make a clip.

Go around the fabric edge of the case and bend the raw cut inside.

Sew the second rectangle from the opposite edge of the case in the same way.

The last two seams (on one side of the case and on the other side of the case) I made by hand, a hidden seam. It was possible to lay a line on the machine, but it turned out rather thick, and the seam could not lie evenly, and the thread to wave.

The pencil case is ready!

At your discretion, you can make it longer using a longer zipper, or wider, cutting out the main part, the interfacing and the detail of the lining of a larger size.

  1. Thank you! This came together in a jiffy. I started sewing at 6:00 and was done at 6:30, just in time to take it to my study group. It matches my dress!
