The inspiration for this fox came from one of my daughters favorite shirts. She wears all the time, so I thought she would like a stuffed fox. And she does. In fact both of my kids love these and every time I make a new one they snatch it up and claim it as their own. This one is her favorite because it matches her cape!
Are you ready to make one for yourself? It is a pretty quick project and the fabric/felt combinations are endless. I’m partial to Shetland Flannel but you can use any fabric you have on hand.
Supplies:
Fox pattern (click here to download the pattern PDF)
1/4 yard of fabric for the fox main body (I used Shetland Flannel in redwood, pumpkin and navy)
Two colors of felt (I used cream and a darker color that coordinates with the main fabric)
Fiberfill
Cut pattern pieces:
Cut 2 pieces of the fox body (mirror images) from the main fabric.
Cut 2 inner ears, large eyes, chest and lower tail from the cream colored fabric.
Cut 4 antlers (optional), 2 small eyes, nose and upper tail from the darker felt.
Instructions:
1. Pin the cream colored felt pieces (inner ears, large eyes, chest and lower tail) to the front of the fox body. Make sure all pieces are 1/2 away from the edge (except the bottom).
Stitch along the outer edge of the felt to secure each piece to the fabric. You can use a contrasting thread for this step or the same color as your felt.
2. Sew 2 antlers together to form one thick piece. Do this for each antler.
3. Pin all the darker felt pieces (small eyes, nose, upper tail) onto the cream pieces and stitch along the outer edge of the felt.
4. Pin the antlers to the top of the fox head, right sides facing.
You can either have the antlers facing in, towards each other, or out. I’ve made them both ways and I just can’t decided which way I prefer! Place the back of the fox body on top of the front, right sides facing.
5. Starting at the bottom, sew together using a 1/4″ seam allowance. Go slow around the small curves and the neck. Leave a 2-3″ opening at the bottom.
6. Turn your fox right side out. Start stuffing the head and ears with fiberfill. You will need more stuffing than you may think. Keep stuffing the head, neck and then the body.
7. Once it is stuffed to your liking, hand stitch the opening closed.
You are done! I hope you have as much fun sewing your cute stuffed fox with antlers as I did!
