How to make a Washington Pavement block Patchwork DIY.
The XOX Pin Cushion
Approx. 2 ¾” x 8 ¼” finished
What you will need:
Materials
X in Liberty Lifestyle Stile print A: 1 x 1½” x 3½” rectangle, 2 x 1½” squares
X in Liberty Lifestyle Stile print B: 1 x 1½” x 3½” rectangle, 2 x 1½” squares
O in Liberty Lifestyle Stile print C: 2 x 1½” x 3½” rectangles, 2 x 1½” squares
Background: 19 x 1½” squares
Optional ribbon/fabric tape for tag
Backing Fabric in Liberty Stile print D: 3 ¼” x 8 ¾”
Polyfill stuffing
Seam allowance is ¼” throughout
Spraying the fabrics lightly with starch before cutting will help control the bias
Step 1.
To make top of the O shape, place ‘O’ rectangles vertically, take a background square and mark a diagonal line in pencil on wrong side of square. Place on rectangle top corner right sides together using diagram 1 for reference. Sew along the pencil line. Trim both fabrics to ¼” beyond the line. Open out and press. Repeat with the rectangle opposite corner. Repeat all of step 1 with other O rectangle; drawing the diagonal in the opposite direction.
Step 2.
This block is sewn diagonally in rows. Arrange the O rectangles from step 1 and all other fabric pieces as in diagram 2 (dashed lines mark the separate rows). Complete each row, then join rows together matching points as you go. Double prong fork pins are a great way to hold seams together snugly and achieve accurate points.
Step 3.
Press. Trim to approx. 3 ¼” x 8 ¾” taking care to leave ¼” seam allowance intact at the seam points all round the edge of the pincushion front. Fold tag ribbon/tape in half and secure with a few stitches within the seam allowance at one of the short edges with tag facing inwards.
Step 4.
Place pincushion front and backing fabric right sides together. Sew around the edge leaving 2” gap on one edge for turning. Clip corners.
Step 5.
Turn through and press. Stuff with polyfill and close opening using slip stitch.
