I’m searching the perfect bag. Perfect for me of course! I’ve bought a large piece of soft purple leather to use for a bag. So in the last 5 months I’ve collected images from the web and catalogues and now it’s time to experiment!
This is the first try using Amy Butler's Lotus fabric, 12’’ Hex Open Internal Bag Frame and a piece of warm & natural.
What you’ll need:
Fabric Wide 110 cm:
for exterior 70cm
for lining 70cm
Warm and natural or lightweight interfacing
12" Hex Open Internal Bag Frame
On the wrong side of the exterior fabric mark and cut 2 pieces 57x35 cm.
Using a ruler mark from a at 8-1214-24-28,5-33-41-45-49 cm.
Draw the edges 6x6 cm.
The base of the bag (cd) measure 45 cm.
Cut 2 pieces as above from the interfacing and make a sandwich with the exterior fabric.
Following the image and the marks, fold the sandwich and with a zigzag-stitch sew all around to
secure the interfacing and creases.
t should be approx 32,5 cm from a to e.
On the exterior fabric mark and cut 2 pieces 6,5 cm x the lenght from a to e (approx 32,5 cm).
Repeat on the lining fabric.
Make a sandwich with exterior fabric (wrong side) and interfacing.
Mark and cut 2 pieces 35 cm x 6. Fold in half and sew the handles.
2 ways:
- fold right sides lenghtwise together to make a 3 cm tube.
Sew the lenght and turn right side out. Iron and topstitch to secure.
- fold wrong sides lengthwise together, turn 1 cm each side and topstitch to secure.
Decide the position of your handles (mine are at 15 cm from a and e) and sew.
Mark the lining using the exterior of the bag (with creases as in the picture) as a pattern.
Place on top of the exterior panel the 6,5x (lenght from a to e) piece. Right sides are facing!
Sew at 1/2 cm.
Repeat for the other exterior and for the lining.
Place the 2 exterior panels right sides together.
If you want you can add now a pocket in the lining. And then place the 2 lining panels right sides together.
Match the seams and pin them in place.
Exterior panels: Sew at 1/2 cm leaving open the top and the edges.
Lining: Sew at 1/2 cm. Don’t sew the top, the edges and leave open 10 cm (or more if you like) for turning.
Turn right side out the lining.
With the exterior of the bag wrong side out and the lining right side out, slide the lining inside the exterior.
The right sides are now facing. Match the seams, pin in place and sew the top. They should
remain 2 separate pieces. Leave open the sides of the top.
Close the edges: match the seams (bottom and side), pin the seams and sew to close the opening at 1/2 cm
Turn right side out and handstitch the opening.
Slide the lining inside the exterior of the bag.
Press the top and handstitch the sides of the top (light blue lines).
You have to sew together the lining and the exterior fabric.
Total 4 lines to sew. Don’t sew them together!
Sew the handles at 1 cm so they stay up.
Fold in half the top and Insert the frame. The sides of the top should stay opened!
Pin in place and topstitch to secure the frame.
I hope you enjoyed my notes!
