Vinyl Zipper Case Tutorial ~ Free-Tutorial.net

This case really is EASY and FAST, mostly because we don’t need to line it. You see, this In the Hoop Vinyl Poofy Zipper Case is made from glitter vinyl, which is a non-woven material and will not unravel! This case could hold so many things and be used for so many applications!

At first I designed it for pencils but honestly it’s slightly short for long (non-sharpen) pencils. Perfect if they are sharp! Then I realized it was the perfect size for small sewing notions and makeup! What will you use yours for?

Supplies

What you need for your In the Hoop Vinyl Poofy zipper case:

    Rotary cutter
    Mat
    Ruler
    Schmetz embroidery needles 75/11
    Clear tape
    Marking pen (optional)
    Short craft scissors
    Point turner
    Thread (I used the 50wt Aurifil thread)
    5″x7″ hoop or larger (130mm x 180mm)

Materials

I used Glitter vinyl from Sew Sweetness for this project but honestly you can use any non-woven material, i.e. neoprene, clear vinyl, marine vinyl, etc.

    Tear away stabilizer (medium weight – non fuzzy fibers)
    12″ Zipper
    (2) Front 3-1/2″ width x 8″ height (greeb and blue Glitter vinyl)
    (1) Back 6″ width x 8″ height (pink Glitter vinyl)
    Ribbon (optional)

Steps

Wind a matching bobbin from the top thread and insert into bobbin case (not shown). Insert a brand new embroidery needle 75/11.

Hoop tear away stabilizer

Sew stitch number one – which is the zipper placement stitch.

Place the zipper inside the placement stitch. Be sure the zipper pull is above the stitch at least an inch. Secure a few times with clear tape.

Insert hoop back into machine and sew the next stitch which is the zipper secure stitch. Once stitching is finished remove hoop from machine and place on a flat surface.

Remove clear tape. Use the tip of your scissors as needed. Discard tape.

Look, all gone!

Place one of the front pieces of glitter vinyl on the left side of the zipper, right side facing down. Center between height of zipper and place the left side along the edge of the zipper. Secure with tape.

Insert hoop into machine and sew the next stitch. This is the left front secure stitch.

Once stitching is complete, remove hoop and place on a flat surface.

Remove clear tape.

Flip the left front to reveal the Glitter vinyl and finger press.

Insert hoop in machine and sew the left front top stitch.

Looks so pretty!!!

Remove hoop from machine and place on a flat surface.

Repeat the same thing on the right front.

Place the right front, right side facing down, align right edge with the right side of the zipper. Secure with clear tape.

Insert hoop into machine and stitch the right front secure stitch. Remove hoop from machine and place on a flat surface. Remove the clear tape.

Flip the right front revealing the glitter vinyl. Finger press.

Insert hoop into machine. Stitch the right front top stitch. Remove hoop from machine once finished stitching.

**Move Zipper Pull down about 2″**

*Optional* If you want to add a ribbon loop or strap, fold length in half. Place the two raw edges of the ribbon outside of the front top (about 1″). Use clear tape to secure the ribbon in place.

Place the front right sides together with the front.

Secure with clear tape along the top and bottom of the back.

Insert hoop into machine and sew final stitch which is the construction stitch. Remove hoop from machine and remove materials from hoop.

Remove all tear away stabilizer. Careful not to disturb the stitches.

Slip your fingers inside the case and “Un-Zip” the zipper. Notice how I flipped the zipper pull toward the top of the case – this will make unzipping much easier.
