Step 1
Start by downloading the free pattern which you can download by clicking the link above in 'what you will need' and cut out the following pieces as illustrated above. Iron fusible interfacing to the back of the three pieces.
Step 2
Also cut out the following as illustrated above. Ensuring that you cut out the binding on the bias.
Step 3
Pin the two outer coin purse pieces right sides together
Step 4
Using a 1cm (3/8″) seam allowance, stitch the two pieces together and press the seam allowance open
Step 5
Pin and stitch the tiny pom pom trim along the top edge so that the pom poms are just below 1cm (3/8″) from top edge
Step 6
Pin and edge stitch cotton wadding to wrong side of coin purse lining or iron fusible wadding instead
Step 7
Pin the top edge of the lining to the top edge of outer coin purse, right sides together. Using a 1cm (3/8″) seam allowance, stitch the two pieces together and press the seam allowance open.
Step 8
Fold seam over so that the outer and lining pieces are together with wrong sides facing. Baste around the perimeter using a 3mm (1/8”) seam allowance. Edge stitch just above seam so stitching is on top half (ie the piece with the pom pom trim on). Stitch along seamed top edge using 1cm (3/8″) seam allowance to secure in place
Step 9
Using a water soluble marker draw the top line on your outer coin purse flap as marked on the pattern
Step 10
Top stitch along your marked line.
Step 11
Fold up the lower half of the coin pocket along seam. Pin and baste stitch in place using a 3mm (1/8”) seam allowance. Pin elastic on inside top edge of purse and stitch in place to secure
Step 12
zig zag round outer raw edges so that applying the binding is easier
Step 13
Fold the binding in half lengthwise, wrong sides together and press. Unfold and then bring the long edges in to meet the center crease. Press again. Refold on the original crease and press again or use a bias binding maker.
Step 14
Pin the binding on the outer edge of the coin purse starting at the bottom. Turn the ends up 5mm for a neat finish as photograph above. Stitch the binding to the coin purse using a 6mm (1/4”) seam allowance, backstitching at the start and finish.
Step 15
Fold the binding over to the outer side and pin in place. Pull the elastic loop upwards and pin in place.
Step 16
Top stitch binding in place, backstitching at the start and finish.
Step 17
Cover your self cover button in fabric and hand stitch in place
Step 18
Your finished coin purse is now ready to use
