How to Bind an Edge Using Bias Binding

Binding is a useful and versatile decorative way to finish an edge, whether you are using it instead of a seam to join layers, or simply binding the edge of a single layer.

You can either buy ready made bias binding or make your own as seen in my sewing techniques 'How to cut & sew bias strips' and 'how make bias binding using a binding maker'.

In this week's sewing technique I am sharing the most common way I apply bias binding for both home decor items and clothing.

The trick to make sure your second row of stitching catches the back bias edge is to make sure your second row is above the original stitching line. Do this by pressing your bias top edge just a smidge over the first row of stitching.

How-to step by step

Step 1

To sew the bias strips to your project you will need a sewing machine, sewing pins and iron and ironing board.

Step 2

Open out one side of the bias tape (the narrower side if there is an off-centre fold) and turn in 5mm (1/4") at the starting end. Pin the right side of the tape to the front of the fabric, the tape seam line ( the fold near the edge) aligning with the fabric seam line. If there are finished edges at the ends of the edge you are binding, turn under the finishing end of the tape;

but if the finishing end meets the starting point as illustrated here, lap it over the turned in starting end without turning in the finishing end.

Step 4

Stitch along the seam line

Step 5

Flip the bias tape up and press it away from the seam line.

Step 6

Now take it over the raw edge to the back of the fabric and pin the other folded edge of the tape to the back so that it just covers the stitching. You may need to trim the fabric seam allowance if it is wider than the folded tape or very bulky. Pin to secure.

Step 7

Top stitch the tape in place from the front, making sure the stitching goes through the folded edge of the tape on the back.

Step 8

If you prefer no stitching to be visible from the front, ‘stitch in the ditch’ machine stitch in the groove just alongside the binding.
