You could easily change the outer fabric and adjust the stitch lines and use this tutorial for a multitude of things like a make up brush holder , crochet hooks holder or paint brush holder for when you are painting whilst out and about!
My biggest tip for stitching oilcloth is to use a Teflon foot so that the foot does not stick to the fabric and use paper clips to hold the fabric in place as pins will leave lasting holes
You will need...
peter rabbit cotton canvas fabric
light blue polka dot bias binding
stone spot oilcloth
teflon sewing machine foot
How-to step by step...
Step 1
Start by cutting out a piece of Peter Rabbit fabric 64cm wide x 30cm long, and one piece of oilcloth 64cm wide x 30cm long. Place the pieces together, so that the right sides face outwards. Paper clip together, (using pins leaves holes in the oilcloth)
Step 2
Cut a piece of bias binding 64cm in length. On one of the longer edges place your opened bias fold to the edge of your fabric. Right side of your bias will be placed against the wrong side of your fabric. Paperclip in place. Sew along the fold line with a straight stitch
Step 3
Press bias binding away from the edge. Re-fold the strip around the raw edges, and turn your roll up pen case to the oilcloth side. Edge stitch the bias strip’s folded edge to the right side of the fabric, so it covers the first stitching line.
Step 4
Fold the bottom up 8cm and paper clip in place
Step 5
Mark stitch lines 2cm apart, starting 1 cm in from the sides.
Step 6
Using a straight stitch, stitch along your marked lines, back stitching at the beginning and end to secure.
Step 7
Bias bind round the case. Cut a length of bias binding 125cm long. Starting at the corner, place your opened bias binding to the edge of your fabric, turning over the end of the bias binding by 5mm where it starts, to give a neat finish. Right side of your bias will be placed against the wrong side of your fabric. Pin and paperclip in place all the way round finishing at the other corner, turn in end 5mm.
Step 8
Sew along the fold line with a straight stitch
Step 9
Press bias binding away from the edge
Step 10
Re-fold the strip around the raw edges, and turn your roll up pen case to the oilcloth side. Edge stitch the bias strip’s folded edge to the right side of the fabric, so it covers the first stitching line.
Step 11
Cut a strip of bias binding 68cm in length. Fold in half, folding under the ends and stitch together using a straight stitch
Step 12
Pin binding ties on right edge, cm up from the bottom edge.
Step 13
Stitch in place
Step 14
Fill with pens
Step 15
Close flap and roll up
Step 16
Tie the straps
