DIY flat pouch bag | How to sew Zipper Pouch | Easy Sewing Tutorial for Beginner
Supplies:
- a piece of oilcloth at least 20 cm by 20 cm
- matching yarn or nylon thread
- a zipper at least as long as the longest side of your pen bag
- two small pieces of oilcloth measuring 8 cm by 3 cm
Method:
- One takes a piece of oilcloth (here 24 by 24 and very roomy for the pins).
- Take the small piece of toile and fold it as biais around the end of the zipper. Hold firmly and topstitch in 1 pass (with invisible thread). Make sure there is only a small piece of the zipper in the piece of toile. So cut off what is too much. This makes turning, at the very end, easier.
- Do the same for the other end of the zipper. Keep in mind that the two ends should come exactly as far as the width of the pen pocket. If necessary, cut another piece of the zipper before attaching the second piece.
- Now place the zipper so that the end comes as far as the side seam of the pen pocket, and the long side of the zipper is just on the edge of the top. Right sides together. Stitch in place with a zipper foot.
- Turn over and topstitch 2 mm from the edge.
- Fold the toile in half and place the other long side of the pen pocket again on the edge of the toile. Right sides together. Stitch again with zipper foot.
- Topstitching the second side is not obvious. Keep your pen pocket turned inside out and place it in front of your needle. The entire pen pocket will be half and half strop in front of the presser foot, but stitch through carefully and then you will manage to make it to the end without any problems. At the end it will look like this:
- If you lift the toile you can see that I made it to the end nicely.
- You now have a cylinder.
- Decide how you will shape your pen pocket. With the zipper in the middle:
Or classic, with the zipper at the top:
- Open the zipper. Fold inside out and stitch the side seams, as close to the edge as possible. Nevertheless, make sure everything is secure. Especially if you stitch with nylon thread, it is recommended to go over the seam twice. This is because nylon thread comes loose more easily where you have stitched.
Do this on both sides. Turn over very carefully and with angelic patience push out the corner. A skewer can help. The closer you stitch to the seam, the easier it is to turn.
- Now just fill it, and done!
