Sewing a lunch bag from oilcloth

Sewing a lunch bag from oilcloth

How to sew a practical lunch bag. It is made of oilcloth on both sides and is therefore washable.

Perfect for bread on the go, fruit or other small snacks. The bag is also ideal as a swimming bag - for wet swimwear.

You will need:

Oil cloth material
    Velcro
    Sewing machine
    Clips
    Yarn or cotton

Material

Think about all the materials you will need and get them together. Choose two contrasting colours for your oil cloth fabrics.

Cutting

Cut out a piece from each oil cloth: size 25x50 cm.

Velcro fastener
Think about which oilcloth you want on the outside.

Now attach a 10 cm long Velcro strip to the middle of the top end of the fabric and the counterpart to the middle of the bottom end. However, leave at least 2 cm of space to the top edge.

Sew the inner and outer pockets
Fold each piece of oilcloth together lengthways and pin both sides together. Now sew the two sides onto the inner and outer pockets.

Prepare the corners
Now fold the bottom part of each bag together as shown in the picture, so that a triangle is formed at the corners.
Now measure a line 5 cm to the tip.

Sew the corners
Sew the 5 cm lines on both corners of each pocket. This will give the pockets a three-dimensional shape.
Cut back the excess fabric at the corner.

Insert into each other
Insert the two bags into each other so that the right sides are on top of each other.
To do this, you must first turn one of the two bags over. It doesn't matter which side.

Sewing together
Now sew around the top edge. This will connect the two pockets.
Caution: Leave an opening for turning.

Turn and topstitch
Now turn the pockets over and place them inside each other to create the final shape.
Fold the seam allowances inwards at the turning opening and topstitch the entire top edge again.

Done
Now you're done and can fill the bag and simply roll the top edge down.
The Velcro fastener keeps everything in place and the filling level remains flexible.
