The only thing missing is a handle. I like to grab my bags by a handle whenever possible. I’ve been grabbing this one by the little tab, but I wanted something more. So I figured out a handle for it.
Head to Noodlehead for the full tutorial and sizes. I’m just going to show you how I made the handle.
Start by cutting a piece 2 5/8″ x the height of your bag. Just use Anna’s size chart to figure out how tall this piece needs to be according to the size you’re making. You’ll use this instead of the zipper tab she has you cut. Fold it with right sides together and sew down the long edge using a 1/4″ seam allowance. Turn it right side out and fold the top short end under 1/4″ and press.
Once you’ve sewn the zipper onto the bag opening and lining on both sides, cut it to the desired length, again using Anna’s tutorial as a guide. Then just slide the zipper into the handle about 1/2″ on the end you’ve turned under.
Sew all the way around the handle piece about 1/8″ from each edge, locking the zipper in. Before you sew around the bag, just pin the handle out of the way, onto the outside fabric, not the lining.
Continue with Anna’s tutorial, until you get to boxing the outside fabric corner on the side with the handle.
On this corner, instead of sewing on your marked line, put a pin in to hold it in place and draw a 2nd line 1/2″ away from your sewing line, closer to the corner. Cut along this line.
Now reach your fingers through this corner into the bag, unpin your handle and pull it through the corner. Make sure it’s not twisted in there. Pin in place, centered where your seams meet. Now sew along the first line you drew, according to Anna’s directions.
That’s it. Finish according to the tutorial and enjoy your awesome pouch… with an easy-to-carry handle!
