Sewing Box Pattern and Tutorial. Great gift idea for that sewist you know! Easy to make exploding sewing box.
What do we need?
2mm. cardboard. It is possible to use binding caps.
Two coordinated fabric backings
Colored rubber band
Paper adhesive tape
Hot glue gun
White glue
Ruler, pencils, cutters, box cutter, tweezers and sponge roller
1. Let's start on the outside. We carve 5 pieces of 10'5 x 10'5 cm and 4 of 9'5 x 9'5 cm in cardboard.
2. With adhesive paper tape, we hook the big pieces leaving 2mm of separation between them. To make sure that the distance is correct, use a piece of the same cardboard, it will be used to mark the separation grid. We place the tape on one of the pieces, then a strip of the same cardboard vertically and then the other piece. When we remove the strip of cardboard, we will see that the separation is exact.
3. This will be the outer part of the hood.
4. This will be the inner part
1. We cut a 12 x 12cm piece of fabric and with white glue we hook it on the central piece of cardboard on the side where there is no adhesive tape (inside). We remove what is left over from the corners.
2. We put glue on the outside of the 5 fishes and we hook them on the other fabric, leaving a margin of 1'5cm. As always it is important to put the glue on the cardboard, never on the fabric. We apply the glue with the tweezers and then pass the foam roller. In this way we avoid that there is too much glue and that the fabric can be damaged.
3. Trim the excess fabric leaving 1'5cm. We cut the edges diagonally and make a cut at the corners (I have marked them with the strips). We put glue to the face and hook the seams marking well the corners.
4. Now we fold the 9'5 x 9'5cm pieces and with the hot glue we hook, at the front, a piece of glue. We do the same with the 4, that later, with hot glue, we will hook on the piece that we have put together before (photo 3).
Now we will make the center piece. We cut a piece of 7 x 7 cm, 4 pieces of 7 x 9 cm and 4 pieces of 6 x 8 cm.
The assembly is exactly the same as in the outer piece. The only difference is that we will glue a piece of padding on one of the 6x 8 cm pieces before covering it. This will be our steel.
As you can see in the photo I have changed the order of the fabrics.
1. Finally, for the inner piece we will cut a rectangle of 16 x 4 cm. We will divide it into 4 parts of 4 cm and we will use the cutter to mark the folds.
2. On the outside, we line it with the fabric, folding the margins towards the outside.
3. Close the square with a piece of adhesive paper tape.
4. Cut a 6 x 18 cm piece of fabric. We make a 1 cm hem on each side of the long side and glue it with glue. Glue over the square.
Now we can assemble the sewing box. With the hot glue we glue the central piece on the outer one and then the inner one on the central one.
1. All that remains is the lid. We cut a piece of 11 x 11cm and 3cm per side. We should add another piece of 9'5 x 9'5cm. It came to me later and I already had the pictures taken.
2. We glue on the clothes with 1'5cm of margin.
3. We glue the margin to the outside.
4. Cut the corners
5. With the adhesive tape, we close the box.
6. Line the outside of the box, marking the corners very well. It doesn't matter if the finishing is a little sloppy, we will cover it with a tape.
On the 9'5 x 9'5cm piece we glue a piece of wadding to give it some volume. We line it with the contrasting linen and glue it on top of the lid with hot glue.
We put a ribbon all around the cover, also glued with hot glue. This way we will cover the joint of the fabrics. To cover the joint of the ribbon we place a shoemaker's bow.
We can now fill it with all the sewing utensils, it seems incredible how many things fit in this small box!!!
I am delighted with the result and, in addition to being beautiful, it is practical!!!
